Why Is Water Testing and Sampling Important?

Water testing is a crucial part of maintaining compliance with a series of legislation and regulations, particularly in relation to Legionella control.

The most straightforward route to compliance with Legionella control requirements is to follow the guidance laid out in ACOP L8, adherence to which is widely accepted to amount to legal compliance. According to ACOP L8, “Testing of water quality is an essential part of the treatment regime, particularly in cooling systems”.

Adhering to the relevant regulations and legislation is important not only for the continuity of your business and to avoid legal ramifications, but also to protect building occupants from waterborne hazards such as Legionella.

At EMS, we offer expert water testing services and temperature checks to help ensure ongoing compliance.

FAQs

What other water testing services do we offer?

As well as water quality testing, we offer:
• Legionella water treatment
• Legionella water temperature checks
Our services make for a complete solution to your water hygiene needs, helping you reach and maintain compliance. We can recommend different solutions based on your requirements and offer expert consultancy to provide long-term reassurance.

When should you test for legionella?

You should test for Legionella under the following circumstances:
• If your Legionella risk assessment recommends it
• If areas of your water system, either hot or cold, are consistently between 20˚C and 45˚C
• If parts of your water system are subject to low usage, high heat loss, unused sections, stagnation or crossflow
• If your site has vulnerable occupants (e.g. care home, school)
• If your control measures are suspected to be inadequate
• After long periods of system disuse
Legionella testing can be carried out as a standalone service, but is usually reserved as a follow-up to a Legionella risk assessment, if necessary. To book your test, email our team at .

What are the testing parameters?

When we conduct our water testing services, there are three main parameters we observe:
Physical – temperature, clarity, conductivity, odour, colour

Biological – bacteria, algae
We undertake professional laboratory testing to monitor all relevant parameters for your system and ensure that water is safe and meets the required legal standards.
